September 2008

Welcome back to the library!  We are off to a great start.

As the youngest children have been coming in over the past couple of weeks, we have been reviewing library citizenship:  simple things like sharing, turning pages with care, putting books back where they belong, and returning books on time.  If you help your prep student or first grader with this last task, especially, by knowing when his/her library day is, we will continue to have happy kids who are able to check out a new book each week.

The primary students already know all the rules, and they are jumping into the swing of things like pros.  The second graders are now able to browse the Green Spot books and will soon be exploring our Non-Fiction section.  Fourth graders are discovering the authors and books in the Blue Spot section.  As the year progresses, each of the grades will be learning specific library skills, and our fifth graders are already stepping into a unit on book genres.

As we have met with the older students, we have been eager to hear what they read over the summer.  What a range of books they have tackled!  Some of their recommendations go straight onto our ordering lists.  Some, however, do not.  Occasionally, books that are fine at home for your individual student may not be as appropriate for the school population, as a whole. At the Ambrit Library we try very hard to take into consideration the maturity level of all of our students as we choose and catalogue books &endash; it is an on-going process.

Please come in and look at the beautiful new carpet in our storytime area.  We purchased it with money earned through our used book sales &endash; thank you for your support.  And speaking of book sales, the Good Books Book Fair is coming to Ambrit the first week of October.  Your children will have a chance to browse and purchase during school on Thursday, October 2, and Friday, October 3, and the book fair will continue during the Fall BBQ on Saturday.   We hope to see you there.

Happy reading,
Amy Ronning and Jill Wiebe
